Ethics & Brain Function, Multilingualism and Memory for Court Interpreters

This JBCC-approved court interpreting workshop that will enable interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) to earn 8 hours of continuing education credit, including 2 hours of ethics education.

The ethics portion will be a review of the Code of Ethics and best practices for spoken language interpreting in Texas courts, plus “What should I do if…”  – a discussion on situations that may arise in court and what the interpreter should do in those situations. The other 6 hours will be on “The Brain and Its functions, Memory and Multilingualism,” which will deal with how multilingual brains and memory work, plus tips on improving concentration and memory. The workshop will be in English and will be language-neutral. This workshop is intended mainly for court interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission who are seeking to fulfill their JBCC continuing education requirement, but will also be useful for interpreters preparing to take the JBCC licensing exam or the federal court interpreter certification exam. 

Participants licensed by JBCC will earn 8 continuing education hours

Participants certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) will earn 8 continuing education points

About our presenter

M. Eta Trabing has been a technical translator since 1956, first in Argentina, then in the US. She started as a conference and  court interpreter in 1968  and became a US federally certified court interpreter in 1980 and a state-certified court interpreter in 1995. She retired from interpreting in 2002, but continues to work as a translator, specializing in legal contracts and criminal law, medicine, and animal science and related agricultural areas. Ms. Trabing has been teaching interpretation and translation for almost three decades, and has been a guest speaker and trainer at numerous conferences and seminars throughout the U.S and abroad. She is an approved provider of continuing education courses for both the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission and the American Translators Association.
