This JBCC-approved court interpreting webinar that will enable interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) to earn 3 hours of non-ethics continuing education credit. The webinar has also been approved by ATA for 3 continuing education points.

The webinar is designed to help court interpreters understand the vital role that they play when interpreting for plea bargain agreements. Participants will learn the definition and purpose of a plea bargain, the different types of plea bargains that exist, and how the plea bargain process can affect individuals with limited English proficiency. The webinar will provide an overview of the protocol and best practices for sight translation and consecutive and simultaneous modes when used to interpret for plea bargain agreements in state courts.

Interpreters will have the opportunity to practice and improve their skills in the three modes of interpreting. The language of instruction will be English and the webinar will be language-neutral, although some practice exercises may be offered in Spanish for those who work with Spanish.

Although this course will be similar in some respects to the session on plea bargains offered during the TAJIT annual conference on September 12th, it is a different course and has been approved separately by JBCC. This course will offer a more in-depth look at plea bargain procedures in county and district courts in Texas. Anyone who attended the plea bargain session during the TAJIT conference can also earn 3 hours of JBCC-approved continuing education credit for this webinar.

This webinar is intended mainly for court interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission who are seeking to fulfill their JBCC continuing education requirement, but will also be useful for interpreters preparing to take the JBCC licensing exam or the federal court interpreter certification exam

This event will be held online via Zoom. You will receive information on how to connect to the Zoom session a few days before the webinar.

In order to comply with JBCC attendance verification requirements and receive your certificate of participation, you must keep your computer or phone camera on throughout the webinar. Please do not register if you are not willing or able to comply with this requirement.

Participants licensed by JBCC will earn 3 non-ethics continuing education hours

Participants certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) will earn 3 continuing education points
